Canvas Rebel Interview x Meet Erin Szoch

Erin Szoch

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erin Szoch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Erin, appreciate you joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?

I am happier as a creative. It gives me the flexibility I need while creating content I enjoy. I once had a “regular” job, and often questioned its worth. By that, I mean I was constantly stressed and unhappy. I don’t miss having a job, though I may miss the routine and feeling the grind.

During the last couple of years at my old job, I handled most of the marketing, graphic design, and social media. I learned by shadowing someone, but I also taught myself a lot, which has benefited my content. During my job, I collaborated on projects with about two people, but I prefer working alone. While brainstorming with others can be nice, too many cooks in the kitchen can hurt the creative process.

Now, I am a stay-at-home mom who can blog whenever and about whatever she wants. I create fun videos and cute graphics while caring for two beautiful babies. Having an outlet as a mom helps alleviate a lot of my stress. It is something that belongs to me and I can concentrate on. Some days are harder than others, whether due to mental blocks from exhaustion or being too busy to work on my content, but I wouldn’t change a thing.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I’ve always been drawn to creativity and artistic pursuits. From styling outfits at a young age, crafting jewelry in high school, and taking art classes in college, I’ve always needed a creative outlet. I’m constantly inspired and jot down ideas regularly.

During college, I began exploring blogging and social media, trying to juggle soccer, academics, and content creation. After graduating, I focused on my job at a demanding start-up and planning my wedding. Post-wedding, I questioned if I was truly where I wanted to be. I discussed my dissatisfaction with my CFO, a mentor, who advised me to envision my future in five years and identify job aspects I enjoyed. This led me to a role as a business and marketing manager, where I was happiest. Ultimately, I left due to compensation and the work environment.

Becoming a mom clarified my purpose. I aspired to share my life, showcasing the fun and challenging moments, and be a mom who maintains her style and home decor. I enjoy sharing products that simplify life for moms or pet owners. Interested in budgeting? I highlight affordable and worthwhile purchases.

To truly stand out in today’s fast-paced world, I believe in showcasing your authentic self – your personality, humor, and, above all, your compassion. These traits motivated me to dive into blogging and content creation. I want my platform to be genuine and inviting. I love receiving DMs with questions I can answer, whether it’s about my sweater, favorite toddler toy, or my second-trimester experience.

Being a mom is my greatest pride. Every day is a unique adventure, and I cherish that. I enjoy sharing my journey as a mother, wife, and individual managing anxiety. Mental well-being is crucial to me, and if I can positively influence even one person, I am achieving my purpose.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

While earning money is certainly enjoyable, it isn’t the most fulfilling part for me. What truly matters is making an impact, like bringing laughter or inspiring creativity in others. Focusing on a single topic for your posts is usually a recommended strategy for attracting a specific audience. However, my content tends to be diverse because I’m interested in many things. As I mentioned, I enjoy sharing my life and creating whatever inspires me. Embracing creative freedom is wonderful.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

In a webinar, I heard something that resonated with me: “It’s not about the number of followers, but the relationship you have with them.” Although I don’t have as many followers as famous influencers, I feel supported by those I do have. I aim to be transparent and entertaining for my audience. I share everything from my favorite outfits to my childbirth experience. I love sharing my faith in God while also sharing my family life. I am an open book, sharing my experiences to help even just one person. When someone expresses gratitude to me for sharing my thoughts, discoveries, or experiences, I feel joyful and encouraged. Feel free to explore my website or social to learn about my lifestyle, interests, and passions. I aim to inspire and encourage you to keep faith central in everything you do.
